Finally getting around to update the website… The committee details, social and events list, and other bits and pieces will be updated in the coming days, so please bear with us during that process.

Don’t forget that tonight (Tues 4th Oct) is the Half-Yard at the Clifton at 8pm.

Next week (Thurs 13th Oct) is the Skinner’s Brewery Tour.

Update: Run-up to Easter

Just a quick update to keep everyone abreast of the goings on as we approach the Easter break.

We will be celebrating the 40th birthday of CAMRA on Wednesday 16th March at the Clifton Inn.  We’re inviting along some local CAMRA members to help strengthen bridges and ensure that they know what we are about.  Possibly more important for some of you, however, is the news that there will be a spread of food laid on by the society (as is traditional at a birthday party). Facebook event.

The following week, and back to our usual social night of Thursday, we will be hosting the UPRACS AGM.  This will also be at the Clifton Inn, starting at 8pm, and will include the second half-yard competition of the year (so some free beer!)  If you are interested in standing for a position on the committee, please ensure you turn up on the night and put your case forward – the society functions at its best with a committed committee…

The final week of term will see the last social before Easter.  Details are yet to be confirmed, though it will likely be this year’s ‘cigar social’. Following the success of the gin distillery tour, I hope that this will be popular also.

Finally… Some of you may have noticed that the raffle has yet to be drawn…  Do not fear, we haven’t forgotten, and the draw will be taking place at the AGM when we hope the winners will be there in person to receive their prizes.

We all hope to see you in the run up to Easter.  As always, please bring friends, family, pets etc, as the socials are always that little bit better with a good turn out.

Half Yard Results

Yes… this contest did take place in October… However, Joe has (finally) put the results up on the Facebook page, so I thought they’d best go up on here too. Don’t forget that you’ll have a chance to redeem yourself at the AGM (date TBC) when we will be holding the second round of this year’s Half Yard…

The results:

Tom A 13.0*
…Izy 21.0
Jordan 52.2
Joe 21.4
Jack 47.7*
Marly 2min 38sec
Simon 18.7
El Normo DNF***
Mark 45.8
Jordan H 53.0*
Bradley 28.8
Dave Bl 1min 54sec
Oli W 23.5
Will 21.1
Gez 23.5**
Joe B 56,5
Ben 55.7**
Rob S 24.5
Henry 11.8
Rob M 10.8 ^Fastest time^
Oli F 32.7*
Sam 15.9*
Josh 23.3
Dom DNF
Harry 46.6*
Dewi 1m 8sec
Jamie 33.0
Dug 33.1*

Each asterisk corresponds to an occasion of unacceptable levels of spillage. Given the state of the floor, we decided that lickage would have required a separate risk assessment (and no-one had a pen to fill in the form), so we added a penalty of 5 seconds for each occasion instead.

You can rest assured that, as a whole, the committee was rather disappointed with its performance and have all been undertaking a strict training regime to ensure that standards are higher next time around…

UPRACS Raffle

For the Re:fresh Sports and Societies Fair, the society decided to run a raffle with the opportunity to win some top-notch beer for new members. However, we’ve decided to give the rest of the membership the opportunity of winning one of the prizes by selling tickets at the forthcoming socials. So, if you want the chance to win one of the prizes listed below, then grab hold of one of the committee members on the North Hill Pub Crawl or Barbican Pub Crawl over the coming two weeks. Entry is just £1 for a strip of tickets.

1st Prize: 4 bottles of real ale
Jennings Sneck Lifter, Summerskills Indiana Bones, Dartmoor Legend, Hunter’s Pheasant Plucker

2nd Prize: 3 bottles of real ale
Brains The Rev James, Atlantic Blue, St Austell Admirals Ale

3rd Prize: 2 bottles of real ale
Bays Devon Dumpling, O’Hanlon’s Stormstay

The draw for the raffle will be conducted on the Skinners Brewery tour which is taking place on the 17th February (check out the Upcoming Events page for information on the tour social).

New Website for University of Plymouth Real Ale and Cider Society

Welcome to the new website of UPRACS.

This isn’t being produced to replace the Facebook profile for the society, but should serve a different purpose. We hope to provide interesting news from the society, to upload reviews and photos from socials throughout the year, and to provide a slightly better insight into the workings of the society.

You will notice along the menu, above, that there are a few more static pages which you can visit:

  • About/Membership: fairly self-explanatory – a great place to look if you’re thinking of joining the society and are wondering what we’re all about.
  • Upcoming Events: also quite obvious… this page will list those events which are planned over the coming weeks and months. A few details (e.g. venue/time) will be included, as well as a link to any relevent Facebook event (for extra details).
  • The Committee: avert your eyes now. We’re not a pretty bunch, but between us we get a reasonable job done. Let us know if you’ve got any ideas or have an questions to ask about the society.

All the best as we enter 2011, we hope to see as many of you as possible at the pub for a pint one of the evenings.

Webmaster / Cigar and Spirits Officer
